We Were Born in the Bush

In 2008, head guide James Waweru led his first guests through Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater with nothing more than a battered Land Rover and an encyclopedic knowledge of wildlife. That first trip — five guests, eight days, countless lions — convinced him that the world deserved a different kind of safari company.

Not one that herded tourists between lodges. But one that created genuine encounters with the wild — the kind that you carry with you for the rest of your life.

Sixteen years later, Valverde has taken over 12,000 guests on safari across 12 African countries. We've grown. But we've never lost that original ethos: deep knowledge, small groups, and an unshakable love for Africa.
